WIP Wednesday: The Bobble Blankie

It is with great excitement, happiness, and satisfaction in my heart that I dedicate today’s WIP Wednesday to Emma’s new bobble blankie!

I made it my mission this week to finally complete this project, and by God’s grace I did it! It definitely could have been a tad bigger, but once I ran out of pink yarn there was no way I was going to buy more, so I told myself that it’s a baby blankie and is justified in being small. ;)

After debating which colors to use for the ruffle trim, I decided on the pretty combination of white, yellow and blue before you. It’s happy, it looks like Spring, and it matches the decor in miss Emma’s room. I absolutely love it, and so does she!

The only slight disappointment I have with myself is the fact that I accidentally used a size smaller hook for the ruffle trim than I did for the rest of the blanket. It didn’t dawn on me until I was 3/4 of the way done with the blue edging (a.k.a. completely done with the blanket), so there was obviously no way I was about to take everything out and re-do it. In all honesty, the ruffle edge looks beautiful just as it is, but there will always be this part of me that wonders how much nicer it might have looked with slightly bigger ruffles. Bah! Oh well. You can’t win ‘em all, right?!

Really, though, Emma’s love and affection for her brand new blankie are indicators that this one is definitely a winner! I was thrilled to tuck her into bed last night and see her happy little face light up as her tiny hands pulled her blankie close and snuggled up for sweet dreams. Oh, my heart…

A big “thank you” goes out to both Rachael at Maybe Matilda for introducing me to this blanket and to Cuckoo at Tales from Cuckoo Land for bringing everyone this pattern. Ladies, you are both wonderful!

Making my first blanket was a learning process in and of itself, and I know how much it helps me to have specifics when starting new projects. In thinking through the initial “start-up” questions I had, here are a few of my helpful tips:

  • I used a size J hook and worsted weight yarn (Vanna’s Choice Baby Yarn, to be exact).
  • After doing some math–which I assure you is not this English major’s forte–I started my blanket with a chain of 101. Once I started my second row with a sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, this gave me a total of 100 stitches in each row.
  • 100 stitches proved to be a wonderfully even number for spacing out my bobbles! I alternated every bobble row by making the first bobble in the 5th stitch of the row and the 10th stitch of the row, and for every bobble row I always completed the subsequent bobbles every 10 stitches (so there are 9 stitches between each bobble).
  • I made 3 rows of single crochet between each row of bobbles. Speaking of single crochets, it’s important to note that Cuckoo’s pattern is written in UK terms. This means that you will complete single crochets where she says “double” and double crochets where she says “treble.”

If you have any other questions then feel free to email me or leave a comment on this post. I am always happy to help! Enjoy your evening and happy crocheting! :)

  2. Aw Kim the blanket is so precious…I just love the colors and everything. I can see that Emma loves it too. She will have that for a very long time :) Great Job!!

  3. SO very sweet! I just love seeing her reaction to it…you can tell she LOVES it. What a lovely job you did! Hate when I forget to change hook size too. It happens! Still looks wonderful…no one would know, but I know that feeling of what if….

  4. Oh, I love me some bobbles. You did a great job and nobody (but you) will ever notice anything amiss with the trim. Thanks so much for sharing at our LInk It Up Thursday party today.

  5. The colours on the blanket are so lovely and its so clear she adores her blanket! I was wondering how many skeins of wool you ended up using for it? I’m thinking of making this in Cascade superwash or a wool lion brand wool… how would you suggest substituting the number of skeins into a different yarn? Thanks :)
